Guarding authenticity at literary tourism sites
This paper examines the heritage of Canadian author L. M. Montgomery at 3 literary tourism sites in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Using Goffman's suggestion that all social actions involve moral claims, the paper analyses site geography, signage, orientation speeches, policy documents, as well as interviews with key informants to show that site guardians argue for the authenticity of their particular site by making various truth claims and excluding rival claims. These claims give interpretative form to each site. The paper concludes that such forms (modernist, rationalist, and eclectic) contribute to the development of Prince Edward Island literary tourism and help shape a dynamic and distinctive Montgomery heritage., Accession Number: 20013074553. Life and times
"The creator of Anne of Green Gables brought us one of the world's most out-spoken, popular heroines, yet she herself lived a repressed life of relative obscurity. Although her efforts as a writer were not supported by her family, Lucy Maud Montgomery received international acclaim and financial reward for her works, which included 23 books and over 1000 short stories and poems. An international symposium on her work is held each year. Excerpts from her journals reveal a passionate woman trapped in a restrictive environment."--Social Studies Catalogue 1999., Y9G-96-05C.B.C.; Public Performance rights included; [videorecording]; video cassette :sd., col. ;45 min. ;VHS; Produced and directed by: Barbara Doran.
