Note

The book that is being referenced here is likely "Anne's House of Dreams" (1917) and the books of poems "The Watchman and other poems" (1916). Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel S. Sharpe raised the 116th Battalion (Ontario County), CEF, for European service in World War I. He led the regiment in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, the Battle of Passchendaele, and an attack at Avion in August 1917. He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for the Unionist Party while serving in Europe. In early 1918, he was awarded the DSO for his actions during the Battle of Passchendaele. He committed suicide in 1918 while suffering from "shell shock", which was later discovered to be Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In 2018 his hometown of Uxbridge revealed a statue in his memory, and in 2019 the provincial courthouse in Oshawa was renamed in his honour and a plaque commemorating him was placed in Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
