The Avery Scholarship was established in December 1998 by the owners of Cavendish Figurines Ltd., Don Maxfield and Jeannette Arsenault, as a contribution to their Island community in grateful appreciation of the legacy of L.M. Montgomery on PEI and in tribute to the "spirit of Anne.” The award is named after the fictional Avery Scholarship in Anne of Green Gables. Readers of Montgomery's first novel will know that Anne, with much hard work and determination, wins the coveted scholarship, which opens up new educational possibilities.  The real scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded each year to a student from a Prince Edward Island high school entering the first year of the Faculty of Arts at UPEI and planning to major in English.

The recipient is chosen on the basis of an essay (750-1000 words) written on a topic provided by the L.M. Montgomery Institute committee and forwarded to the Institute through the school's Guidance Office. Essays are evaluated by a L.M. Montgomery Institute sub-committee and a winner is recommended to the Admissions, Scholarship and Degree Committee of UPEI. Topics are usually announced in January and the scholarship is officially awarded in the spring.

Past winners of the Avery scholarship are Chrissy Sherren (1999), Roseanne Gauthier (2000), Kelly Miles (2001), and Elizabeth McMillan (2002), Julie Fleming (2003). To read their winning essays, just click on the name of the winner.
