Credit Courses

English 333: L.M. Montgomery

In 1998, under the leadership of the L.M. Montgomery Institute, the University of Prince Edward Island established its first university course dedicated to Montgomery. Introduced as a special studies course in 1996, this highly popular course has attracted students from across Canada and around the world. This course investigates L.M. Montgomery's contributions as a writer of women's and children's fiction; as a diarist and poet; and as a regional and international writer. Readings include some of Montgomery's most popular works from the Anne and Emily series as well as her lesser-known works. It is the only regular credit undergraduate course on Montgomery in North America.

English as a Second Language

From 1994-1999, the L.M. Montgomery Institute hosted nearly 150 students from all over Japan through its English Language Summer School. In this unique program, students studied English through a curriculum based on the life and works of L.M. Montgomery, and gained an understanding of Canadian culture through their participation in accompanying homestay and cultural activities programs. They participated in Island arts and crafts workshops taught by local artists and artisans, visited historical Montgomery sites, and toured the beaches of the Prince Edward Island National Park. Billeting with homestay families enabled them to live as well as learn the English language and Island traditions.
